RisingWaters.SusanIsrael.helper.JPG

In February, 2017 Susan installed Rising Waters on the San Blas Islands (or Kuna Yala) in Panama with community participation and a children’s art workshop. The San Blas are very flat, low-lying coral atolls with bamboo and concrete homes and no infrastructure, electricity, or plumbing. The water comes up to the center of the island when tides are highest, and the San Blas are predicted to be uninhabitable in 20 years due to sea level rise. Roughly 20-40,000 Kuna people will need to relocate to mainland mountains where they own ancestral land.

An exhibition of photographs from the San Blas installation were shown at the United Nations for the Oceans Conference and at EarthDay Texas, 2017, and are available for loan.
